Gian Paolo Barbieri 71 for Linea Italiana…

Guess what? I feel SOOO happy! The other day I spoke to Gian Paolo Barbieri!  We worked a lot for Italian Vogue together and also for Linea Italiana, another great Italian magazine. This, I think, is our first cover together. It has been many many years since we met or even spoke. After my last blog here, I got a strong urge and called his studio, spoke to his  assistant who was totally thrilled talking to me, telling me about all the hundreds of pictures he has seen of me and how much he loves them. I was totally thrilled talking to HIM and a few moments later I got a call from Gian Paolo, very close by it seemed, very present, from his house in the Seychelles! How many years I have been longing for this! To connect back with him. And how easy it was in the right moment. Truly grateful! I remember this cover very well. How I loved the white garment and Gian Paolo`s way of working, first seeing to that all the details are perfect and then concentrating on the face expression. so totally sure of what he wanted. I experienced it as very relaxing, that I could relax into myself and trust his skill. He would show me polaroids as we went along creating the photo so that I would know what he saw.  All of this taught me how to use the muscles in my face and get the facial expression. Both letting go, connecting to my Inner Source, Inner Nature and sort of control the expression. That part is much the same as acting. And it is part of what is interesting in modelling for me, to be both on the inside and the outside.

Barbieri 70s, red before Chrismas…

One of my absolute favourite photographers, Gian Paolo Barbieri, made this shoot with me for Italian Vogue, sometime early 70s. Not only did I do my own make up back then but also a lot of the styling. I`m sorry to not remember the stylist on this special shoot. I`m sorry to not have taken notes back then or to have a copy of the original magazine but I don`t. So I´ll just take it from there…and remember what I remember. I can read that the style is inspired by the Arabic and Beduin people and that the label is MOONs by stylist Judith Ulman. What I know is that I travelled a lot in the northern Arabic countries at that time and felt very much at home in that culture, with the calling for prayer from the minarets, the souks, the Atlas mountains and the people living there whom I spent a lot of time with and even lived with for a short while. I loved the way the women gathered together, the whole feminine culture and the way they supported each other. And the way they welcomed me in, cared for me and shared their songs and culture with me. Those trips coloured me a lot, they made a great impact on my life and future choices and also on my personal style. So for this shoot I added the touch of Mystery of the Bedouin by wearing the shawl on my head and the headband around it, a  feminine Lawrence of Arabia. I would very much love to meet and work with Gian Paolo again! Really really love it!

New York modelling before Christmas…

70s New York modelling! I remember the snow there, skating in the park, all the lights in the dark. Scavullo for Bazaar…or was it Vogue? I was in N.Y.on a contract for Bazaar, mainly working with Bill King for them right then. Back then it was a thing that if you worked for Bazaar you could not work for Vogue, everything was much more  ”exclusive and special” in that sense. Today it`s not at all like that, maybe even the opposite, if you are in one magazine you will be in the other as well. Anyway, I remember this day working with Scavullo, he was a real gentleman. I remember this great collar on the blouse, too big on the shoulders I thought and pulled it up close to my face.See the biography of  Scavullo  including many photos of famous people in the retrospective here

soon very soon…

it may be like this again. Snow. Cold. Winterbeauty! The wise men say it will be this coming weekend. We shall see. I remember loving this winter when I got this coat, this beautiful blanket coat from Comme Des Garcons. I saw it on the runway and fell in love. I told someone whom I had also fallen in love with that I loved it. A month later it was delivered to me by DHL I love you! My father was still alive then, although handicapped by his stroke. I remember this winter which was a lot about spending time with him. We all did. Each one in the family taking turns, making dinner, spending precious time, precious as time is when you know it will not last forever. And I remember how beautiful I felt in my gift, my coat and how special the walk was between my house and my fathers, tracking in the wild, wearing the coat, stopping on the road to take in the beauty all around me, every little snowflake was important. That was that year, two or three years ago. Then my travelling consisted of those walks over to my dads house, with nothing else except a short trip to Paris twice a year. That was how it was for eight years as we had committed family care. I treasure those years with my dad. Now that he is no longer with us here, I still treasure those moments. My coat is looking at me now. I`m looking at my coat. Never got to America to walk the streets there with the man who gave it to me. Now I can go wherever I want to. I don`t know where or when that will be. I shall see. Meanwhile I welcome the winter beauty if and when it wants to come.

Three white beauties! Flown in to a casting in Hamburg for a hair job. There was about 30 of us. Oh I was taken by the extraordinary personalities and would have loved to sit at a dinner table for hours with them hearing all the magic life stories. This has been an extraordinary day.
