Cheap Ebay brushes – are they worth your money? Let’s review some.

About a month ago I got the idea to order a bunch of super cheap synthetic makeup brushes off Ebay to really try them out and review them for you.

All 8 brushes/sets arrived to Sweden without any additional customs fees after between two and three weeks, very standard shipping time (and therefore not something I will review). I have tested them by grabbing the brush hairs and pulling hard to see if the ferrules or hairs fall out, they never should. I have washed them to see if they get a different shape or lose hair, and I have studied and pinched and swished around and used them to see if they’re actually good brushes, not depending on what they actually cost. All boiled down to a point system where the brush can get max 25 points. How did they do? Let’s go through them one by one!

You find the link to the Ebay page where the brush is sold by clicking the headline. The price mentioned is what I paid when I got the brush (and the prices are the same still when I write this post) but there might be changes with time, plus potential rate differences between countries.

cheap ebay makeup brushes

Here they all are, laid out to dry after their first wash!

flat top buffer brush

Flat Top Buffer Brush

flat top buffer brush

Flat Top Buffer Brush

Flat Top Buffer Brush

Price: US $1.47 (13 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 2.5/5

This brush is too thin and floppy for being a foundation brush, which my identical looking but much more expensive brushes are perfect for. I ended up liking it for face powder/blending which I wasn’t expecting.

Shape: 4.5/5

The hairs are evenly cut except for a few strays along the sides and one long hair in the middle. Otherwise consistent.

Softness: 5/5

This brush is soft as heck.

Durability: 5/5

Did not crack, split, lose hair or make any cracking noise when I gave it the tugging test. Held its shape and all hairs when I washed it.

Worth the price: 3.5/5

If you want a brush for blending your face or applying powder, sure. But not for foundation.

Conclusion: 20.5/25

Not what it should be but it feels incredibly nice, can’t deny that.

tapered face brush

Tapered Face Brush

tapered face brush

Tapered Face Brush

Tapered Face Brush

Price: £1.42 (19 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 3.5/5

The brush doesn’t have a small amount of hairs but they are very slippery and floppy. Makes the brush feel too thin.

Shape: 1/5

The brush is supposed to be tapered but it has kind of a ridge in the middle, two flatter sides and a frickin swirl on one of them? Completely useless, far too unevenly cut.

Softness: 4/5

Very soft, but that’s just because of the far too slippery brush hairs.

Durability: 3.5/5

Did not crack, split or lose hair but made a cracking noise when I gave it the tugging test. Held its shape and all hairs when I washed it but didn’t straighten the weird shape out at all. That was an obvious production flaw.

Worth the price: 0/5

Doesn’t do anything right, so no.

Conclusion: 12/25

Shitty brush, don’t buy it.

chubby kabuki brush

Chubby Kabuki Brush

chubby kabuki brush

Chubby Kabuki Brush

Chubby Kabuki Brush

Price: AU $5.72 (36 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 5/5

Thick as right-wing politics.

Shape: 2/5

The brush is evenly cut, but it has thick black hairs sticking up everywhere, can you see them? Feels as if some of the tapered hairs were pulled up from the glue while drying and then trimmed off bluntly with scissors. Doesn’t speak quality.

Softness: 2/5

The hairs are short and feel a bit prickly, and those thicker bluntly cut black hairs don’t help.

Durability: 0/5

The ferrule was easily pulled off the brush so the glue will easily start falling apart. The brush is very hard to clean well as it’s so thick, product is really hard to get out of it and the soap you’re washing with aswell. Will get gross quite quickly.

Worth the price: 1/5

If you want a weird brush that might not hold up well for you, sure. But not because the quality in any way.

Conclusion: 10/25

Feels shitty but it’s gimmicky and cute. Buy it for cuteness, nothing else.

round foundation brush

Round Foundation Brush

round foundation brush

Round Foundation Brush

Round Foundation Brush

Price: US $1.44 (13 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 5/5

Nice and fluffy with a lovely bounce. The perfect density for foundation! Takes a bit of time to apply with but it goes on beautifully.

Shape: 5/5

A rounded, well cut brush with no stray hairs.

Softness: 4/5

Has a nice fluffiness for being so dense! Doesn’t feel like complete velvet, but it’s the step right below.

Durability: 5/5

Did not crack, split, lose hair or make any cracking noise when I gave it the tugging test. Held its shape and all hairs when I washed it.

Worth the price: 5/5

Definitely, this one could have been ten times as expensive without a question.

Conclusion: 24/25

Great dirt cheap find! Get it!

toothbrush style face brush

Toothbrush Style Face Brush

toothbrush style face brush

Toothbrush Style Face Brush

Toothbrush Style Face Brush

Price: US $1.00 (9 SEK). US $4.99 (43 SEK) shipping.

Density: 5/5

Nice and fluffy with a lovely bounce. The perfect density for concealer! Absorbs a bit too much product to work nicely with foundation though in my opinion.

Shape: 4.5/5

Nicely rounded and well cut but with one long hair in the top part, plus a strange mash on the top left side. That straightened out when I washed it though so it’s probably from the shipping.

Softness: 5/5

PURE. F-ING. VELVET. I find myself petting this like it was a little animal. The softness makes it blend out concealer under the eyes BEAUTIFULLY with barely any work.

Durability: 5/5

Did not crack, split, lose hair or make any cracking noise when I gave it the tugging test. Held its shape and all hairs when I washed it and it didn’t change in shape at all apart from straightening out that mashed part. The handle is flexible plastic so I don’t dare to tug it too hard, but I’ve used it heavy handedly on the face witout a problem.

Worth the price: 5/5

This one is undereye concealer heaven, could have costed up to ten times more even though it’s one of the more “expensive” brushes of the bunch.

Conclusion: 24.5/25

GET IT! You just have to, it feels like a gimmick but hell it’s wonderful! It has already become the concealer brush I reach for every day.

bent eyeliner brush

Bent Eyeliner Brush

Bent Eyeliner Brush

Price: US $0.99 (9 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 5/5

A very thin but bouncy brush, doesn’t feel like a “three hair bundle” like many thin eyeliner brushes can do.

Shape: 5/5

Doesn’t splay out at all and gives a nice smooth line.

Softness: 5/5

I guess?

Durability: 0/5

The ferrule let go when I tried to pull the little protective plastic tube off the brush head..

Worth the price: 4/5

I guess, I mean you can buy a new one of these every month for a year and still not pay more than full price of a regular cheap eyeliner brush. Just glue the ferrule on tightly if it falls off and hope that the hairs won’t fall out!

Conclusion: 19/25

This is stupidly cheap and a type of brush that rarely is BAD, so I mean sure, why not.

blending brush set

4 Piece Blending Brush Set

blending brush set

4 Piece Blending Brush Set

4 Piece Blending Brush Set

Price: GBP 1.17 (16 SEK). Free shipping.

Density: 3.5/5

These brushes are not floppy and weird, they’re quite well packed so they will blend eyeshadows softly for example, but only number 3, the pointed one, is dense enough to blend something harder like an eye pencil.

Shape: 3.5/5

Brush 1, 2 and 4 are a bit unevenly cut and splayed but it doesn’t make the end result any different as they’re made for blending stuff. So they’re okay I guess.

Softness: 3/5

Brush 2 is the roughest, followed by 1 and 4. The pointed one is the only one that feels silky.

Durability: 2.5/5

The ferrules or hairs didn’t budge on 3 of them but one was easily pulled off, another one made a cracking noise when I pulled it. That makes me wonder how well the others will stay on after a few washes.

Worth the price: 3/5

Same with these as the eyeliner brush – this is so damn cheap that you don’t really waste any money. But they are uninspiring.

Conclusion: 15.5/25

Aaahh right inbetween a “go for it I guess” and “don’t buy it”. If you don’t really really need blending brushes, skip them. They don’t inspire me at all.

8 piece brush set

8 Piece Brush Set

8 piece brush set

8 Piece Brush Set

8 piece brush set

8 Piece Brush Set

8 Piece Brush Set

Price: AU $3.67 (23 SEK). AU $0.21 (1 SEK) shipping.

Density: 4/5

All brushes except for number 6 and 7 have a nice density. Those two are too thin, especially 7, and therefore hard to blend with. The rest are just fine.

Shape: 4.5/5

All brushes are evenly cut and well shaped with no splayed hairs. Half a point off or brush 7 which is too pinched and flat for its shape, a pure design flaw.

Softness: 4/5

All of these are soft, but brush 6 to 8 have a slight texture to them which helps them pick up product in a different way than a super flat smooth brush. So all is good!

Durability: 5/5

Not a single brush had a loose ferrule, none of them made any cracking sounds when pulled and they stayed in shape completely after wash.

Worth the price: 5/5

In this set you get brushes for every kind of detail work. Eyeliner/tightlining with 1, concealer/eyeliner/lipstick with 2 and 3, eyeshadow with 4 and 5, blending with 6 and 7 and at least blending/eyeshadow with 8. A bit of everything! TOTALLY worth the price, many of these have already found a place in my makeup routine.

Conclusion: 22.5/25

With this set you get so many brushes for so little money, even if you end up disliking a few you still get use out of the rest. A wonderful set for anyone who want some more precise tools added to their collection.

Racked the newly opened Sephora – what did I get?

As mentioned earlier Sephora finally opened here in Gothenburg last week, I was far too anxious to be able to go there on the opening day but yesterday I popped my ear plugs in, smeared my brightest red lipstick on and did some mayhem shopping that was done in ten minutes tops. Bdellium Tools 731

This brush is such a treasure! The perfect tool for defining lashlines. I just apply my top lash mascara with the regular wand go get maximum length, coat the Bdellium Tools 731 with mascara and wiggle it at the base of the lashes from underneath, defining and darkening the base to make it look thicker. A great way to eliminate that pale stripe at the base of the lashes that you easily get when doing smokey eyes or dark eyeliners.

For the bottom lashes I get some more product on the brush, swish it through to the tips and then push product into the roots. Depending on how hard you push you get different looks, here I went all in and made the roots solid black. It still look a lot softer than an eyeshadow or eye pencil!

Refills, replacements and one little new friend

Sometimes everything breaks and runs out at the exact same time, am I right? Eleven.se (who ship within Europe) had to be my saviour recently as they had everything I needed, and this is what the save looked like!

I have worn out my second Tangle Teezer hairbrush now so the bristles are all angled and kindly pat my skull instead of brushing. The fact can’t be denied any longer, kind regards, well patted tangly hair.
Replacement: HH Simonsen The Wet Brush which has a handle and therefore won’t be as easy to plunge across the room while action brushing your hair (happened a zillion times with the Tangle Teezer). Should, just like the name says, be kind to both dry and wet hair and not get stuck, my first impression is great as the bristles are softer than they look. It feels like a luxe verison of the Tangle Teezer.

My probably fifteen years old mirror faced death when the apartment got a cross-breeze, the kitchen window blew open and crashed the mirror. I’ve used tiny compatct mirrors for a week now and it just doesn’t work.
Replacement: Claudia Make Up Macro Mirror which is cheap, quite big and uhh.. stands! It has 7x magnification on one side, I never use it myself but good thing I guess! I ended up getting a hot pink one because it was the only one they had, probably not the colour I would have chosen if I had an alternative but I still can’t deny that it makes me happy.

How do you photograph a mirror without taking a selfie? Ehh, hi! Here’s Claudia Make Up Macro Mirror.

I’ve stood in the shower shaking my DermOrganic Intensive Hair Repair Masque upside down multiple times now hoping that someone magically refilled it since my lash shower. Over the last months I have started a slight silicone- and sulphate detox in my hair routine (give me more product tips please!) and this is one of the products that are still standing tall.
Replacement: A new bottle!

And now the new friend! I have had a total lash fixation lately, I want SO much mascara on the lashes, no mercy. My lower lashes are about as long as my top lashes so if I pack them full of mascara the eyes easily start looking thin on top. To counteract that effect I have started applying my mascara on the lower lashline with an angled brush instead, not the ultimate brush but it has worked alright. That makes it easier to focus the product on the roots of the lashes and give them a fluffier, less spider leg-y result. Bdellium Tools 731 is a cute little thing made specifically for mascara application, brush some off the mascara wand and apply it onto the eyes. A little trick is to wiggle some mascara into the lower lashline, down onto the skin, and get that Megan Fox-esque definition that doesn’t really look like makeup.

My favourite makeup tools right now

I have promised for a long time, and you have asked for it so many times, it’s time to finally write a blog post about my favourite makeup tools! I have quite many brushes in rotation so these aren’t the only ones I use, but as my makeup routine looks right now this would be the ones I saved if I had to throw the majority of them out (ouch). I only use synthetic brushes so these are of course fur free aswell.

favourite makeup tools

Some of them look a bit battered, but that’s what happens to loved brushes!

1. Born Pretty Store Mini “Beauty Blender”

A Micro Beauty Blender-esque sponge. I received this one as a surprise from Born Pretty Store so it’s a budget alternative to the Micro Beauty Blender. Wet it under the tap, squeeze out excess water in a towel, then apply and blend out concealer using the “side” with the tip pointing up towards the eye. I didn’t expect to like it but the results are great!

2. Barely Definer Sponge Hard

This sponge is made of a very dense latex free material and has two flat surfaces on each side, doesn’t have the same “poofiness” as the original which I like. It applies foundation and blends cream products like a dream (my alternative to this one is the KICKS Rubicell Sponge). Dampen the same way you dampen the mini one mentioned above. Do not get this one confused with the Definer Sponge Soft, that one is super floppy and gets wonky after the first use.

3. Real Techniques Blush Brush

My go to powder blush/bronzer brush for many years, I have three of them! It has the perfect wispy fluffiness to apply precisely without harsh edges.

4. Zoeva 125 Stippling Face Brush

What I apply cream bronzer with every day. Swish swoosh and done. I often find that duofibre brushes feel too thin because the long bristles don’t get enough support from the shorter ones but this one is nice and dense.

5. Zoeva 128 Cream Cheek Brush

This one isn’t the best for cream blush as intended, I use it for face powder! It’s very soft which means that it doesn’t disrupt the makeup underneath, also it’s slim enough to be very precise and easy to powder for example under the eyes with.

6. Everyday Minerals Itahake Brush

Another old favourite of mine. This is my go-to for powder highlighters! Very thin and wide so it applies perfectly on cheekbones, above eyebrows, down the nose etc. Seems to be discontinued though? Found it on a Swedish site linked above but that’s about it.

favourite makeup tools

7. KICKS Professional Shade & Illuminate Brush

A sharp rounded brush that’s great for cream highlighters or carving out shapes with contouring products. I rarely contour so it’s a highlighter brush for me. I also use it for cleaning up around the eyebrows.

8. Zoeva 227 Soft Definer Vegan Eye Brush

The perfect kind of brush for quick eyeshadow application! When they are wispy and a bit flared like this they apply and blend at the same time. Great to travel with as it can do anything on the eyes. This is an alternative to the Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush which I love but it’s only available in the Starter Kit.

9. Zoeva 142 Concealer Buffer Face Brush

A tiny super dense buffing brush that I love blending cream products or dark powders on the eyes with. Works well with concealer too.

10. Idun Minerals Eye Definer Brush

A sharp little angled brush that I use for very precise eyebrow application or for lining the eyes.

11. Real Techniques Eyebrow Brush

A bigger and fluffier angled brush that is great for a softer eyebrow or a smokey eyeliner. Sadly only available in the Starter Kit and not separately.

12. E.L.F. Cosmetics Professional Concealer Brush

A tiny stiff brush that costs close to nothing and works just perfectly as a lip brush! I have a bunch of them and use them for smoothing edges every time I wear bright/dark lips.
