I finished 3 basic staple products within the same week?!

They all just.. ran out. I had to pop into my backup stash three times this week to get my fix! After trying a zillion beauty products through the years you just end up sticking to certain things (aka the irreplaceable gold medalists), I get the itch just by thinking of being without these three.

finsihed 3 staple products

I’m planning on saving Selma though, she’s still going strong.

Pixi Glow Tonic

A toner heavy in aloe vera (calming) and witch hazel (tightening, calming) with 5% glycolic acid (exfoliating). My skin is so sensitive these days, even the wrong side of a cotton pad can leave my skin burning, but it still loves this toner! By using this daily I have been able to skip all other kinds of gritty or acid/enzyme packed face scrubs, it exfoliates mildly but effective enough to keep my skin in a solid well-exfoliated state. I apply it with a cotton pad after cleansing with a balm in the evening, and some days in the morning after a splash of cold water. Always followed by a good serum and cream. Rallelujah.

Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara

A tubing mascara (comes off like little pantyhose with warm water and a cotton pad, no smudging!) with the thinnest, loveliest wand ever. I’ve never found a quicker mascara for creating heavy pitch black lashes, it basically applies itself. I’m not even smudging my lower lashline with this wand, after all these years I still can’t apply mascara with a regular brush without making a mess but with this one I can. Haha. Review and demo here!

Rouge Bunny Rouge Impalpable Finishing Powder Diaphanous

Invisible face powder. If you thought that your 100% silica powders like MUFE HD were smooth, fine and invisible you just haven’t tried this one. I often find the HD powders having a scary texture, they fly everywhere so that I breathe them in when I use them and they feel stiff and dry on my skin. The Impalpable Finishing Powder is just.. invisible. It takes the shine of my foundation down to a satin matte and keeps it like that all day without turning into an even goopier mess after a few hours. Fills in pores and fine lines beautifully (undereye heaven!) and doesn’t reflect white in photos.

Cailyn Cosmetics Dizzolv’it Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm

Cailyn Cosmetics Dizzolv’it Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm in 100 and 50ml. Choose your weapon.

Let me go on about this product one more time, okay? My best friend ever when it comes to taking off makeup is Dizzolv’it from Cailyn Cosmetics. It’s a cleansing balm, in other words a solid cleanser that melts into an oil on the skin and cleanses without harsh foaming agents. Don’t be afraid of the oily part, because if the product is well made it rinses off easily. That’s exactly the thing about lovely Dizzolv’it, the formula is frickin delicious! In a few seconds it has dissolved all makeup and slides around on the skin, a perfect time to give yourself a little facial massage (there are great guides on YouTube). The easiest thing is to do this before hopping in the shower, face and hands have to be dry when the balm is massaged on, otherwise it starts dissolving!

When you’re done with the massage just get in the shower or rinse over the sink. Immediately when the oil gets in contact with water it turns into a white milk that just runs off the skin. You’re left with smooth and supple skin, not a trace of oil or makeup!

This is the only cleanser, I mean the only one ever, that I can follow up with a toner and the cotton pad is left 100% clean. No lip glosses or lipsticks need to be wiped off on forehand, no waterproof mascaras or liners leave a grey shadow at the base of the lashes, nothing! It doesn’t sting the eyes either so you can really massage it in thorougly.

As an extra plus it’s perfume free, it only smells a little sweet from the fruit extracts that it contains, for example papaya which exfoliates the skin mildly and acerola which is packed with vitamin C. Full INCI at the bottom of this post!

I have maybe three uses left in my small 50ml tub that I’ve used daily for a few months, so this time I went for the large 100ml instead. I do NOT want to stand without this one. You can order it at the Cailyn Cosmetics website.

The small one looks so cute now that I have the mega jar. Such tiny!

Let’s demonstrate! Here we have a smudge proof, waterproof eye pencil and a pea size amount of the Cailyn Dizzolv’it (this amount would be enough for an entire face!)

Dizzolv’it massaged in, quickly dissolving the eye pencil. The consistency is like a thin oil at this stage.

Murad Age-Diffusing Firming Mask

Age-Diffusing Firming Mask from Murad was one of my favourite masks a few years ago, but because of the insane price I haven’t had a tube at home in a while. Now it’s back in my routine and it still gives the same amazing result as before, I couldn’t be happier! The mask promises a plumping effect of the skin that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles plus it should give a tightening effect. As mentioned before, I’m 23 so “anti age” isn’t something that I’m worrying about (if it’s worth worrying about at all, to be honest?). I just believe in giving the skin what it wants, and giving it the best conditions to stay healthy for a long time.

My skin has always needed extra help binding moisture, and it shows immediately when I rinse this mask off that it has absorbed a lot of goodness. My skin is much brighter, redness is reduced and I also find that it over time helps calm pimples. Much is to thank the many moisturizing ingredients, for example the algae Macrocystis Pyrifera (which also acts calming and antibacterial) and the two clays, cleansing bentonite and mineral rich montmorillonite. Full inci at the bottom of the post for the curious one.

My skincare routine

Now it’s finally time for a blog post that I’ve thought about writing for a long time, but never really known how to formulate for it to feel understandable. My skincare routine is quite consistent, I barely dare to try new products as my skin is so picky, but I go back and forth between a few different products depending on what my skin needs that day. I ended up breaking it down to four steps, and in each step I included a handful of products with an indication on how often or why I use it. Feels understandable, right?

So, my skin is sensitive, dry and acne prone. All at once. A deep cleaning product can’t for example be too active without me getting dry/excema or even more pimples, and a moisturizing one has to be rich yet “smart” and not clog my pores. AHA acids (fruit acids, exfoliates and helps the skin absorb moisture) is one of my big red flags as my skin almost always reacts badly, then BHA acids (salicylic acids, exfoliate, works more antiinflammatory) work better but still best as a “topping” a few times a week.

Overall my skincare routine is perfume free, calming, moisture binding, balancing and rich in antioxidants. Does that sound like what you need? Read this and see if you find something new to try!

cleansing

Cleansing

REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Gel

A barely foaming (and therefore not great at dissolving makeup) gel cleanser made for sensitive skin, doesn’t dry my skin out at all. Contains beta glucan which is a calming inflammatory antixodiant, prebiotic oligosaccharides which help the natural protection of the skin by adding good bacteria and calming chamomile.

CAILYN Cosmetics Dizzolv’it Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm

A solid cleansing balm that dissolves ALL makeup when massaged on, then turns into a milk when water is added. Rinses off 100% clean with no oily residue at all. Contains calming and moisturizing aloe vera and calendula flower extract.

Gilda Organic Micellar Cleansing Water

A cleansing water that I like to use after the Cailyn cleansing balm, especially around the hairline and jawline, just to make sure I got all the makeup off. Contains organic plant extracts Propanediol och Bisabolol which cleanses, refreshes and calms the skin.

Foreo Luna for Sensitive/Normal Skin

A cleansing device that you massage your cleanser onto the face with, then you can turn it over, lower the vibration and use the “anti aging side” on wrinkle prone areas. This little thing REVOLUTIONIZED my cleansing! Even very mild cleansers can do a thorough job because of the vibrating knobby bristles, plus the device itself which is waterproof and made of silicone doesn’t gather bacteria. Costs a shitload of money but if mine broke I would get a new one in a heartbeat.

treatments

Treatments, the “use when needed” stuff

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

A smooth powder which you add water to and massage over the skin for a minute. It contains papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes which have a micro exfoliating effect instead of being a classic scratchy scrub. Great for sensitive skin, BHA based which helps calm irritations in the skin and still smoothen it out effectively. Holy grail product!

LUSH Cosmetics Grease Lightning Spot Treatment

A pin point gel to dab on pimples. Contains soothing aloe vera and antibacterial tea tree. Super simple product but it is soo goooood! Plus it’s named after the car in Grease.

Bioline Primaluce Exforadiance Brightening Illuminating Mask

A face mask that is good for skin with acne, wrinkles, scars and/or hyperpigmentation. The only AHA product that my skin still really likes! AHA acids for exfoliation and cell renewal, zinc oxide to calm the skin and decrease redness, mandelic (almond) acid which is antibacterial and great against acne aswell as rosacea as it works against inflammations and redness. It also contains hyaluronic acid (which is a sugar molecule, not an acid!) which binds water, great for dehydrated skin! Another holy grail product that I’ve gone through many tubes of.

serums

Serums

REN Vita Mineral Omega 3 Optimum Skin Oil

A skim plumping serum oil to apply before moisturizer that optimises the effect of the skincare you put on top. It’s thin and absorbs into the skin very easily, not greasy at all! Contains Omega 3 from brown algae and inca inchi (nut oil) which firms the skin and are rich in fatty acids, Omega 6 and 9 from brown algae calms and soothes irritation, vitamin A from rose hip seed oil stimulates cell renewal, vitamin E from rice germ oil works as an antioxidant.

REN Keep Young and Beautiful Instant Firming Beauty Shot

A hyaluronic gel serum that absorbs into the skin and gives instant effect, leaving the skin SO plump and soft, even looking brighter right away. Contains hyaluronic acid from yeast biofermentation, one kind that instantly firms and plumps and one that works in the long run. It also contains phycocolloids, a seaweed gelling ingredient, which together with the hyaluronic acid helps hydrate the skin. This is a MOISTURE BOMB.

moisturizers

Moisturizers

Evologie Stay Clear cream

A lightweight oil free cream with salicylic acid that helps keep the skin clear without drying it out or irritating it. Contains calming beta glucan and chamomile which helps the skin feel soothed and hydrated instead of stressing it to produce excess oil. A great one for sensitive acne prone skin!

M Picaut Calming Cocoon Cream

A thick balmy cream that nourishes, calms and gives firmness to dry, sensitive and/or mature skin. The main ingredient is avocado oil which contains loads of Omega 9 which binds moisture to the skin, repairs and calms redness, and also contains loads of vitamins and minerals that helps fight free radicals. Contains a bio complex (organic avocado, coconut, wild yams and natural antiinflammatory phytosteroles) that helps balance the skin and add moisture deep into the skin. This is one of my skin besties, it helped me through last winter and it even works during the summer for me. Don’t be afraid of the oily consistency, use it at night and you’ll wake up with the most amazing skin ever!

REN Keep Young And Beautiful Firm and Lift Eye Cream

A lifting and firming eye cream which I use for its excellent consistency, it’s right inbetween a gel and a cream which makes it feel refreshing and still moisturizing. I’m not too picky with anti aging ingredients as I’m only 23 but this one has a bunch of them. Hexapeptide-11 from yeast fermentation that firms and reduces wrinkles, wheat peptides which work as a wrinkle filler, plumping amino acids, alpha-linoleic acid from arctic lingonberry seed oil that brightens and adds moisture, safflower ceramides that binds water and a yeast collagen that increases moisture level.
