saw this movie the other day and it totally broke my heart. To think that this actually happened? and not too long ago?
Michael B. Jordan (to all the The Wire Lovers, y’all gon be proud when you see his performance in this) who plays Oscar Grant, a young man who was fatally shot by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009, Oakland, California. The immediate and subsequent direct evidence of the shooting was documented by video cameras held by passengers on the train idling next to the platform, These videos were made available through television news and internet video. The Police officer only got sentenced for 2 yrs prison. This murder case caused alotta protests and riots.
The director explains why there is some real footage of the actual shooting in the movie:
”That was something that I was initially very firmly against. I didn’t want any real footage in the film. But you sometimes have to take a step back. Being from the Bay Area, I knew that footage like the back of my hand, but more people from around the world had no idea about this story. It made sense for them to see that footage and see what happened to Oscar, and I think it was a responsibility that we had to put that out there.”
I’m so happy that he did, because i had NO idea about this heartbreaking story until i saw the movie.
I recommend it. Maybe not today, but it’s been 5 years TODAY since we lost a young man for injustice.
